System monitoring is another way to ensure optimal performance and to stay ahead of potential issues before they arise. In most cases, when hardware begins to fail it will often trigger alarms on the phone system. Using software to monitor these alarms, a system administrator can become aware of a potential problem and arrange to have the hardware replaced before it fails completely. This is also true in the case of circuits or phone lines that are performing poorly. When the circuits are not performing properly, this can contribute to poor call quality or audio issues. Even though the issue resides outside of the phone system, monitoring tools can help the system administrator determine which circuit is having the issue so that the problem can be reported to the communications provider. Monitoring the system allows for a proactive approach for troubleshooting and system maintenance.

Since most business systems today are voice over IP enabled, network performance is a key element in how well the phone system performs when making or receiving calls. Monitoring on the network side should also be completed with VoIP technology in mind. The business phone system also has tools that will help the system administrator pinpoint causes of poor audio quality that are related to network performance issues. These tools are dependent on the model of phone system purchased however; most manufacturers recognize the need to have a way to monitor VoIP traffic on a converged network.

How to Use Performance Logs and Alerts on Windows XP Computers

On a Windows XP Computer, this tool can be very handy. It enables you to log counter information to a file and to trigger alerts that are based on configured events. You can automatically collect performance data from the local computer or from remote computers.

You can also view the logged data from System Monitor, or you can export it to a spreadsheet program or a database, such as Structured Query Language.

The Performance Logs and Alerts node contains three type of logs alerts.

o Counter Logs Log activity for selected counters at regular intervals.

To enable performance logging on computer, follow these steps:

STEP 1. In the Performance window, expand Performance Logs And Alerts.

STEP 2. Right-click Counter Logs, and select New Log Settings.

STEP 4. On the General tab, add the counters that you like to log. Modify the sampling interval if necessary.

STEP 5. On the Log Files tab, you can change the name and location of the log file, as well as the type of file if required.

STEP 6. On the Schedule tab, configure the start and stop times for logging. You can manually stop and start logging, or you can configure logging to start and stop at specified times.

STEP 7. Click OK to save the log configuration.

To view performance logs on Windows XP computer, follow these steps:

STEP 1. In the Performance console, click System Monitor, right-click the data display, and
then choose Properties.

STEP 2. In the System Monitor Properties dialog box, on the Source tab, select Log Files. Click Add, and enter the name of the log file that you wish to view. Press OK to continue.

STEP 3. Next, Right-click the data display, and then select Add Counters.

STEP 4. Add the counters that you like to view, and then click OK. The available counters are limited to those that are present in the log.
